Ghyll talk:Current events
I am starting this here because it seems the most appropriate. I am working on a javascript that will calculate Ghyllian dates from Earth dates and vice versa. There seem to be some snags. The issues I have are:
- We took some extended turns so there is no longer a direct correllation between Ghyll dates and Earth dates.
- The Folktown Records script works just fine for FR# to Ghyll dates but it has no real correlation (other than the arbitrary "turns" to Earth time).
- There is a ratio of Ghyll days to Earth days. If it takes 26 "turns" to 1 Ghyll year then the ratio changes as the turns are lengthened. Someone mentioned a "revisionist" phase between the first and second turn. where does that fit into the Ghyll timeline for the Encyclopedia?
I am trying to develop this thing in a way (a client-based script) that everyone can contribute and modify. Ideally this should operate as a pick-a-date, press convert and out pops the answer. Simple and clean. Here is where I have it stored as of right now (and I am constantly modifying). Ghyll Time Conversion
If I can get this working the way it should (with a direct correllation between Earth time and Ghyll time) will that modify Ghyll dates on the turn calendar on this page? Or should I modify the script to account for the Ghyll dates as presented? Which would be the preferred methodology? --Dr. H. L. Ackroyd 15:33, 27 Jan 2005 (EST)
Welp, hrm. I'm not sure there /can/ be a direct correlation between Earth time and Ghyll time - simply because of the whole "terms" lengthening and shortening (in fact, some possibility for future rounds would be speed turns - where a turn would happen every day, or some such, but it'd still be 1/26th of a Ghyll year, regardless of how long it lasted in Earth days). Is knowing the Earth date really important when determining a Ghyll date? Sbp had developed a quickie Python turn-to-Ghyllian script (edit Current events and scroll to the bottom for the source) which I've been using to determine the turn dates. --Morbus Iff 15:57, 27 Jan 2005 (EST)
From Swhack:
<Morbus> just look at Talk:Current events. <Morbus> man alive ;) <sbp> I've read it <sbp> there's no problem though that I can find <sbp> 1 you can just ignore <Morbus> well, how would you handle the turn lengtehning? <sbp> 2 doesn't come into it <sbp> just by ignoring it <Morbus> well, that won't give you a "real world" conversion then. <sbp> doesn't matter how long we take; in Ghyll, each turn takes 1/26 of a Ghyll year <sbp> yeah it will <sbp> but it won't be linear based on our *dates* <sbp> it'll be based on our turns <Morbus> well, go ahead, say that. <sbp> as it always has been <Morbus> this is starting to sound like math. <Morbus> ;)

What if... modify the script to only accept Earth Dates prior to August 30, 2004 (Ghyll 0/1/1) and that would allow for real-world backtracking. That way you could use your table to look up the "since the encyclopedia" dates and the script for back dates. --Dr. H. L. Ackroyd 16:14, 27 Jan 2005 (EST)
I've no problem with that. --Morbus Iff 18:31, 27 Jan 2005 (EST)
