"Elite Entertainment, founded in 1993, was initially created to fill a void in the laserdisc community. At the time it was clear that HORROR/SCI-FI titles were not getting any "special" treatment. No deleted scenes. No "lost" footage. Not even a theatrical trailer. It was evident that if we wanted to see a "Special Edition" of our favorite HORROR/SCI-FI films, we were going to have to do it ourselves. Our premiere LD release was a "Special Collector's Edition" of George A. Romero's original 1968 classic "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD." For this very important project, we enlisted the help of Lucasfilm's THX program. Elite Entertainment is run by Vini Bancalari who, while working as a laserdisc distributor, had Don May, Jr. as a regular customer. He explains in an interview with Monsters At Play that they "would spend a lot of time on the phone talking about horror films and complaining that no one takes these films seriously enough to release a full fledged "special edition" of any of the classics. I guess one day we just decided to give it a shot ourselves." Don May, Jr. went on to found Synapse Films.

In mid-2006, Elite Entertainment announced a collaboration with The Horror Channel to release Shadow Falls, "the first-ever online horror series", as well as the three-part documentary "Creature Features: Greatest Movie Monsters" (consisting of "The Beasts", "The Machines", and "The Dead"). In late 2007, they started distributing Heartland Horrors, a Horror Channel original series of 10- to 25-minute short films.

Unanswered questions

  • Is there any rhyme or reason to the numbering used on product numbers?
  • Why the change in product number (from EE#### to ELT-DV-####)?
  • Amazon reports Elite Entertainment released "It Happened in Paradise" on VHS?
  • Was the Ulli Lommel collection a DVD or an LD? EE says DVD, LDDB says LD.
  • When a disc has multiple UPCs, does it get a new EE code?

A number of releases have a listed product code in the form of ELT-DV-####, per their website. The EE-#### form came first (at least as far back as 1998, when they were releasing laserdiscs). In the case of the Night of the Living Dead Special Collector's Edition, it was first listed (in 1998) as EE1116, but is now listed as ELT-DV-1116. In cases where both product codes were demonstrably used, this table prefers the EE-#### format, to ease sorting. This index has been compiled based on information available at Elite Entertainment's official site (past and present), Amazon, The Cinema Laser (once Elite Entertainment's internet home), the LaserDisc database, IMDb, and the BIG DVD List.
