The New York Times Weakened by Disappearing Archives
An interesting article posted by Wired News' Adam Penenberg sheds light on the waning influence of the New York Times in cyberspace.
To make a long story short, the newspaper's Google page rankings have been severely diminished by the fact that the newspaper regularly removes its articles from public view just a week after it posts them (due to a pre-existing deal with Lexis-Nexis that nets it $10 million per year).
While it's true that the Times makes a few bucks from selling researchers access to these non-public article pages, Penenberg argues that this penny-wise, pound-foolish strategy may kill the NYT in the long run, especially as the world increasingly turns to search engines as primary content entry main portals.
